The garlic-head vase, named for its garlic-shaped rim, originated in the late Warring States period and became popular during the Qin and Han dynasties. It was referred to as a "warming vessel" by the Song people and was used as a wine container. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, the trend of imitating ancient styles flourished, and the imperial kilns produced many reproductions in various styles: blue and white, polychrome, famille rose, and monochrome glazes, which were used for palace decoration and as flower vessels. This piece features a long neck, a sloping shoulder, rounded body, and a tall foot ring. The vase's elegant and undulating lines convey a graceful charm. The color is deep and pure, with an inner luster that exudes a serene and ancient elegance. The glaze is smooth and lustrous, and the walls of the vessel are thin yet sturdy, appearing as graceful as a standing beauty. These facets reflect on the Qianlong era's meticulous approach to antique reproductions. The red glaze, known as "sacrificial red," was first developed in the early Ming Dynasty. Due to the high technical and material requirements, its production declined after the Xuande period, only to be revived once more during the Kangxi period and ultimately reaching its peak during the Yongzheng and Qianlong periods. The Palace Museum houses a piece titled "Yongzheng Mark Sacrificial Red Glaze Garlic-Head Vase" (No. 故00150667), to which this vase can be considered a Qianlong period homage.
