This pair of plates features flared rims, shallow bodies, and short foot rings. Each part flows together naturally and precisely, rendering an overall smooth form. Both the interior and exterior surfaces are coated with a rich and even yellow glaze. The interior walls are ornamented with three dragons, while the exterior features two dragons, all painted with green glaze. The underside is coated with a creamy white glaze and bears a six-character blue underglaze mark in two lines, reading "Made in the Kangxi Period of the Great Qing Dynasty," written in a graceful and fluid script. Yellow glaze, a low-temperature glaze made from iron, was among the most tightly controlled colors reserved exclusively for the imperial family during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The homophony between "yellow" (黄) and "emperor" (皇) reinforced its association with imperial authority. According to records from the Qing Dynasty, the use of yellow-glazed porcelain was strictly regulated, reserved for the Empress Dowager and the Empress. This specific regulation began in the 19th year of Kangxi's reign. Most surviving examples that date to this period were crafted during the production of a batch of yellow-glazed wares from the first official kiln firing which lasted from the 20th to the 27th year of Kangxi’s reign. Most surviving examples of such plates typically feature either double or single ‘dragon’ motifs, making the ‘three-dragon’ motif on this pair exceptionally rare and likely intended for use by high-ranking members of the imperial court. Despite minor flaws, the preservation of both original plates in this pair ensures that the value is not diminished for collectors and connoisseurs.
